Farzaneh Zilabi, a defence lawyer who has represented many workers, teachers and pensioners for free, including the Haft Tappeh sugarcane workers, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison by Ahvaz’s Revolutionary Court.
Branch 4 of Ahvaz’s Revolutionary Court recently sentenced Farzaneh Zilabi to one year in prison for “propaganda activities against the regime” and a further six months for “insulting the leadership”.
Ms Zilabi, who is currently free on bail, has previously faced various other charges during three hearings, including “insulting the leadership”, “membership of an anti-regime groups”, “collusion to act against national security”, “propaganda activities against the regime”, and “spreading lies”.
The Iranian regime has recently put many defence lawyers under pressure, including sentencing them to many months in prison. These include Mohammad Seifzadeh and Marzieh Nikara who on May 14th were sentenced to one year in prison by Branch 29 of Tehran’s Revolutionary Court for “propaganda activities against the regime” and “spreading lies”.
