Atekeh Rajabi is a campaigning teacher who has been involved in Iran’s teachers’ strikes and protests since September 24th 2022.
On the morning of May 9th 2023, she was arrested while protesting outside Mashhad’s Education Ministry building. On that day, following a call by the Co-ordination Council of Iranian Teachers’ Trade Associations, thousands of teachers throughout Iran demonstrated against the trampling of their students’ rights.
Ms. Rajabi began her hunger strike immediately after her arrest. Friday, May 12th, was the third day of her hunger strike.
Currently there are at least 14 teachers in the Iranian regime’s jails. They include: Esmail Abdi, Hashem Khastar, Rasul Bodaghi, Jafar Ebrahimi, Mohammed Habibi, Mehdi Fathi, Hossein Ramezanpour, Omid Shahmohammadi, Anoosh Adeli, Mahmoud Seddighipour, Aziz Ghasemzadeh, Massoud Farhikhteh, Farzaneh Nazeranpour and Atekeh Rajabi.
The Shahrokh Zamani Action Campaign strongly condemns the arrest and continuing detention of Atekeh Rajabi and other teachers by the Iranian regime and calls for their immediate and unconditional release. We hold the regime responsible for their wellbeing. We urge all trade unionists, socialists and other political activists to help us in defending the rights of all workers, political prisoners and social rights’ activists in Iran.
