Demand for higher wages sparks widespread strikes in Iran

Re-posted from Shahrokh Zamani Action Campaign

On Saturday, April 22nd, workers in around 20 companies and sites in the oil, gas, petrochemical, refineries, power plants and steel industries of Iran went on strike.

The workers are protesting against the regime’s 27% increase in the minimum wage at a time when the massively underestimated official inflation rate is 53% – and some economists estimate it at around double that percentage. The strikers are demanding a 79% pay rise and improvements in their working conditions.

According to the published news and videos on the Telegram channels of workers’ organisations, the workers of Apadana Petrochemical, Arak Machinery, Atlas Steel, Azar Steel Shiraz, Dehloran Petrochemical, Gachsaran Petrochemical, Sadaf Petrochemical, Zima Petrochemical Site 1, Panahsanat Petrochemical Company of Lordegan, IGC of Dasht Abbas, Aksir Sanat, South Pars Phase 14, Kian Petrorefining, Pars Kayhan, Hydrosazan Company, Sirjan Special Machinery, Hengam Petrochemical, Izeh Sinasanat, Yazd Farayand Sanat (industrial process) Company, Jahan Pars, Frasco Asaluyeh and Rostam Jahangiri Contracting have gone on strike.
