The following statement was issued by the Calder Valley, Your Party Group. The Calder Valley group formed spontaneously following the announcement of Your Party. The group is connected to and is working directly with other groups across West Yorkshire and in various parts of England and Scotland. The views expressed in the statement are therefore reflective of a wider discourse and mirror those voiced across the movement. Calder Valley is a Parliamentary Constituency in West Yorkshire.
An appeal to those in interim leadership positions in Your Party
We, the supporters of ‘Your Party’, in Calder Valley, West Yorkshire, stand firm on the principles that first brought us together, backed by the overwhelming mandate of almost 800,000 supporters. We came together, inspired by Zarah Sultana and Jeremy Corbyn’s vision, to build a truly democratic, grassroots political force – one that rejects the old, top-down political models. In Calder Valley have had 4 well attended, enthusiastic local meetings so far but it is clear, since the events unfolding last week, that many supporters are losing heart already. The consequences of allowing this impasse to continue are unforgiveable, both for those who have put their trust in you so far and for the country which desperately needs change.
Our vision is simple: a politics free from the divisive tactics, misogyny, and internal squabbles that only ever help our opponents. We ask everyone in ‘Your Party’, especially those in public roles, to lead by example and uphold the highest standards of conduct and respect.
We were appalled and dismayed to see two of the most well-known members making their differences known in public. This has allowed the main-stream media to belittle and undermine our collective effort so far. It is in danger of closing off a desperately needed alternative to the toxic and dishonest politics of the main-stream Parties and the far right.
We appeal to you to sort out differences constructively and with respect, making sure unity always comes before public rows or personal attacks. If we do not do this, we risk losing the crucial fights ahead. We urge both sides to put aside egos or step aside and let others with
skills, commitment and capacity take over, at least in the interim, to create a truly grassroots and democratic Party.
We want you to know that our commitment to a truly transformative agenda is as strong as ever. This movement was built on solidarity and a shared desire for change. Our country is at an historic juncture and history will judge us all harshly if we do not rise to the political challenges, offering hope and an alternative where it is so clearly needed.
